Where I Would Live If I Moved to Sarasota Today

If I were moving to Sarasota today, I would not start by looking at homes.

I would start by deciding how I want my life to feel here.

Because after years of helping people relocate, one thing is clear.

The people who love where they end up did not choose the “best house.”

They chose the right location for their daily life.

This Is Not About the “Best” Neighborhood

There is no single best place to live in Sarasota.

There are places that fit different lifestyles.

And if I were starting over, I would get very clear on that first.

Because what looks good online and what works day to day are often two different things.

If I Wanted Beach Access Without Daily Friction

I would not go straight to the islands.

That is where most people start.

And it is where many people end up frustrated.

Instead, I would look just off the islands.

Areas that give you:

  • Quick access to Siesta Key

  • Flexibility to move around town

  • Less pressure from seasonal traffic

This gives you the beach lifestyle without feeling stuck during peak times.

If Convenience Was My Priority

I would focus on central Sarasota.

Somewhere that allows me to move easily throughout the area.

From here, you can:

  • Get to the beach

  • Access I-75

  • Reach shopping, dining, and daily essentials quickly

This is the type of location that makes life feel simple.

And simplicity matters more than people realize once they are living here full time.

If I Had a Family or Needed More Space

I would seriously consider areas east of I-75 and parts of Lakewood Ranch.

Not because they are trendy.

Because they function well.

You get:

  • Newer homes

  • Planned communities

  • Amenities that support daily routines

The tradeoff is distance from the water.

And for many families, that tradeoff is worth it.

If I Wanted Walkability and Energy

I would look at downtown Sarasota.

Or close to it.

This gives you:

  • Restaurants and coffee within walking distance

  • Access to the bayfront

  • A more active, social environment

What comes with it:

  • Higher price per square foot

  • More density

  • Less space

This works for a very specific type of lifestyle.

And if that is what you want, it can be the right fit.

If I Wanted Quiet and Privacy

I would look at established neighborhoods slightly removed from main corridors.

Places where:

  • Traffic is lower

  • Homes have more space between them

  • The pace feels slower

These areas are often overlooked.

And for the right person, they offer the most peace.

What I Would Avoid

Not specific neighborhoods.

Specific mistakes.

I would avoid choosing based on:

  • What looks the nicest online

  • What someone else says is “the best”

  • What feels exciting in the moment

Because those are short-term filters.

And this is a long-term decision.

What I Would Focus On Instead

I would map my real life.

Before I ever looked at a house.

I would ask:

Where am I going every day?
How often do I actually want to be at the beach?
Do I value convenience more than quiet?
What does a normal week look like?

And then I would choose a location that supports that.

The Pattern I See Over and Over

People start with one idea.

Then they get here.

And their priorities shift.

Someone who thought they needed to be at the beach ends up further inland.

Someone who wanted space realizes they want more connection.

This is normal.

And it is why clarity upfront matters so much.

If I Had to Narrow It Down

If I were moving to Sarasota today, I would choose one of three directions based on lifestyle:

  • Near the beach, but not directly on the islands

  • Central Sarasota for balance and convenience

  • East of I-75 for space, structure, and newer homes

Each of these supports a very different version of daily life.

And none of them are right or wrong.

What This Means for You

You do not need to find the perfect house first.

You need to find the right area.

Because the right location will make almost any home feel better.

The wrong location will make even a great home feel frustrating.

Final Thoughts

If I were moving to Sarasota today, I would not chase the “best” neighborhood.

I would choose the place that fits how I actually live.

Because that is what determines whether you love it here six months from now.

Not the listing.

Not the photos.

Your daily experience.
